Half Term News letter
No. 121 March 2008

The new Behaviour policy is working very well thanks to your support. Only four children gained Red cards over this half term and those four missed the end of term treat of a film in the hall with ice cream and popcorn. It was a salutory lesson for them and for the others. Hopefully, with a reminder from yourselves at the beginning of the summer term, we will have everyone attending any ‘treat’ next term. Thank you very much for your help.

Easter
This has been a very short term ending in the middle of Holy Week! However, it has given us the opportunity to have a Palm Procession the Monday following Palm Sunday, a Passion drama in the hall and our annual Easter service at the church. Many thanks for the rosemary cuttings, the hall was covered!

Enterprise Trip to Easton College
Enterprise visited Easton College Farm with Mrs Fleckney on Tuesday, 26th February as part of the children’s Living and Growing topic. Everyone enjoyed the Farm Walk and researching food chains.

Comets’ Trips
As part of their PHSE work, Mrs Beverley organised a visit for Comets to the Pets At Home store on the morning of Thursday, 28th February. We saw the fish and small animals for sale and researched the food and living environments that they would need at home. Comets bought the food for the Enterprise fish needed over the two week Easter holiday!
As part of their Living & Growing topic, Comets also visited Wroxham Barns Junior Farm on Thursday, 6th March. Again a most interesting day; the children enjoyed feeding the lambs and petting the animals.

Heartstart
On Monday, 3rd March began the ELS programme led by the staff, with Jeanne Reynolds from Heartstart UK Schools. This is a flexible emergency life support (ELS) training programme for children. This session included the conscious and unconscious casualty, calling 999, putting into the Recovery position.

Music
The Norwich & Norfolk Music Festival took place on Tuesday, 4th March as part in the Norwich & Norfolk County Music Festival. The festival gave children from Endeavour and Enterprise the opportunity to perform two songs before children from other schools and a panel of judges. Every school’s performance is marked against set criteria and an oral critique is given to the children following their performance. Our oral feedback was very positive. A written report was given to Mrs. Stanners to bring back to school. This has been displayed on the Music Board outside Satellites’ classroom. It was a very challenging experience to which the children, although at first rather daunted, rose. We were particularly pleased with the support that many of you gave the children! Congratulations to all!

BBC Concert Orchestra
Children in years 4, 5 and 6 visited the County Showground on Thursday afternoon, 13th March to watch one of four performances by the BBC Concert Orchestra. The “Making Tracks” Concert was hosted by the CBBC presenter, Rani Price, and the orchestra was conducted by Robert Ziegler. These concerts have been arranged in association with Orchestras Live, Norfolk County Council, Norfolk Music Service and South Norfolk Council. This was a fantastic opportunity for the children to experience the magic and power of orchestral music.

Food & Farming Challenge
On Tuesday, 11th March, eleven Enterprise children accompanied by Mrs Baldwin and Mrs Staff journeyed to Easton College for the grand final of the Primary School Food and Farming Challenge. Enterprise have been working together to complete their challenge of “How to Encourage Healthy Eating by Increasing School Lunch Numbers”. Although we did not win first prize we were delighted to be one of the four finalists. All individual finalists received a signed certificate, the class a framed certificate and Mrs Staff, as teacher, a plant. All were in agreement that it was an excellent day out. Next year we will be even more ready!

Sport Relief 2008
We had some interesting sports “personalities” visiting the School on Friday, 14th March in aid of Sport Relief. This was a fundraising initiative brought to you by Comic Relief. Any money raised is spent by Comic Relief to change lives of people in the UK and in some of the world’s poorest countries. We thank Miss Cooke for organising the event, no mean feat, and are delighted to announce that a grand total of £110.00 was raised. Well done!

P.E.
On Tuesday, 19th February a group of Year 11 Sports Leaders, and teachers, from Costessey High School visited us to further their experience of organising set games activities for younger children. This was much enjoyed and we are planning regular joint activities.

On Monday, 10th March the whole school was involved in a fun sports morning with coaches from All Sports. Due to the particularly appalling weather on that day, the activities all had to take place inside, though this did not seem to diminish the children’s enthusiasm!
Swimming
Please note there will be no swimming on Wednesdays next term for Satellites. We are organising swimming in the Autumn for KS2 children.

P.E. Kit
Please can you ensure that your child’s P.E. kit is taken home and washed at the weekends including their track suit which in some cases will be caked in mud!

Friends of Bawburgh School
The staff and children would like to say a “big thank you” to the Friends whose fund raising achievements have meant that a contribution of £1,500 was made towards the purchase of our new projectors and whiteboards, together with £850 towards our new Accelerated Reader books. Your contributions ensure that we can keep up with new initiatives across the curriculum.
We would also like to remind you that the next Friends’ Meeting will take place on Friday, 11th April at 2p.m. All welcome to discuss fund raising ideas. New faces would be gratefully received!!

Energy Busters
The National Trust has linked with Norfolk County Council to fund children’s research in schools. Emily Goldsmith and Clare Eke from the National Trust, have visited Endeavour twice this half term and will be visiting on a further three occasions next week. Endeavour will research the amount of energy the school uses each week using a variety of data. They will then be in a position to advise the School in a practical way of how to save energy during “Switch off, Keep Cool” Week. A special assembly at the end of the five sessions will alert all of us to what they have learnt about our energy habits!

Special Luncheon Birthday Tables
The children seem very keen on the idea of making their birthday in school even more special at lunch times. We would like to introduce from the first day of the new term a Birthday Table for children whose birthday it is and their friends. The Birthday child will work with Clive to have a lunch of their choice from his wide ranging menu. A special table, with balloons and a table cloth, will be laid for them and the child can invite their special friends to join them for lunch. The cost will be £2.00 per head to include table settings, balloons and a birthday cake. If your child has a birthday in the first two weeks of term please let the Office know if you wish us to organise a Special Birthday Table. After that there will be a Birthday Lunch Request Form available from the grey holder in the entrance porch, please fill it in and send it to the Office on a Monday morning giving us at least a week’s notice. Do let us know what your child thought of their special lunch so that we know whether this is a viable idea.

Over 60’s Lunches
These are held on alternate Friday afternoons. We have held two lunches this half term. Lunches are served at 1.30p.m. and consist of a roast dinner and dessert, followed by tea or coffee. These special lunches are not just for locals, any over 60’s are welcome to attend. The cost is only £5.00. Perhaps grandparents may be interested? Please spread the word! We have now a regular 25 visitors for lunch! Dates for after half term are 18th April, 2nd May and 16th May.

Cycling Proficiency Lessons
Ten spaces are available for Year 5 & 6 children. I am sure that you remember Mr Cornwell (Rachael’s Dad) who will be holding three two hour classes in June. Your child will need to have their own cycle at school for each session and a cycle helmet. Two adult helpers will also be needed for each class. Further details will follow next term.
